College players of the week named by TSWA

FOOTBALL: Middle Tennessee’s O’Hara, Carson-Newman’s Peebles earn TSWA weekly awards
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Middle Tennessee’s Asher O’Hara and Carson-Newman’s Rondrow Peebles were named the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association for their efforts in contests from September 2-8.

O’Hara became the first quarterback in school history to throw for 300 yards and rush for 100 yards in a contest in the Blue Raiders’ 45-26 win over Tennessee State. The redshirt sophomore completed 22-of-30 passes for 367 yards and four touchdowns while carrying 11 times for 110 yards.

He recorded TD throws of 80, 22, 30 and 28 yards, three of those in the second half. Through two games the Rolling Meadows, Ill., native has completed 71 percent of his throws for 584 yards and six touchdowns while also leading the club with 135 rushing yards on 24 attempts with one TD.

In his first career start, Peebles tallied 12 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks in the Eagles' 20-13 win over West Florida.  The Knoxville, Tenn., native broke up two passes as well and his 35 tackles for loss negated 28 yards for the Argos.

The junior registered 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks in the first half and Carson-Newman limited UWF to just 262 yards of total offense in the game. Peebles posted a combined 11 tackles in his first two years for the Eagles prior to Saturday’s contest.

MEN’S SOCCER: Carson-Newman’s Karlsen named TSWA award winner
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Carson-Newman’s Tobias Solem Karlsen earned Tennessee Sports Writers Association Men’s Soccer Player of the Week accolades, scoring four goals in the season opener for the Eagles.

The Kongsvinger, Norway, native netted the first four goals of the match for Carson-Newman, scoring twice in 94 seconds in the 11th and 12th minutes on assists from Thaylan Silva. The senior added two more goals in a 98-second stretch in the 18th and 19th minutes on assists by Harrison Collins and Will Sainsbury-Logan.

VOLLEYBALL: King’s Ward named TSWA Player of the Week
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– King University’s Julie Ward was named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association’s Volleyball Player of the Week, averaging 12.7 kills and 14.0 digs in three matches to open the season for the Tornado.

The Berthoud, Colo., native posted 15 kills and 19 digs for her 15th career double-double in the season opener against Carson-Newman. The sophomore followed that with six kills and 16 digs versus Mars Hill University and concluded the weekend with 17 kills and seven digs against Lincoln Memorial.
