NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee’s Jeremiah Boyd and Trevecca Nazarene’s Jack Keele were named the baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association for their efforts in contests from April 17-23.
Boyd batted .312 (5-for-16) in four games with four home runs, seven RBIs and four runs scored for the Blue Raiders. The Harrisburg, N.C., native hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning in a 6-2 victory over Lipscomb in the midweek.
He helped Middle Tennessee take 2-of-3 from Rice over the weekend, including an RBI single and a solo home run in the second of three games against the Owls. In the series finale he collected a two-run homer in the first and a solo shot in the eighth in an extra-inning victory for the Blue Raiders.
Boyd is hitting .301 with three doubles, 12 home runs, 36 RBIs and 29 runs scored in 38 games this season.
Keele tossed a seven-inning, complete-game shutout, allowing just one hit with eight strikeouts against the University of Findlay. The McMinnville, Tenn., native walked two and hit two batters but retired the side in order in the second, fifth and seventh innings. He did not allow a runner past second base and Findlay’s only hit was a leadoff single in the fourth.
Keele upped his record to 5-2 with a 3.09 ERA this season in 10 appearances covering 58.1 innings, giving up 51 hits with 16 walks and 48 strikeouts. Opponents are batting just .230 against the sophomore righthander.
