TSWA announces players of the week - Aug. 30

MEN’S SOCCER: Lipscomb’s Wood garners TSWA Player of the Week accolades
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Lipscomb’s Hayes Wood was named Tennessee Sports Writers Association Player of the Week, netting a pair of goals with two assists in two wins for the Bisons, including a victory over 10th-ranked Saint Louis.

The Chattanooga, Tenn., native scored less than three minutes into the match against Purdue-Fort Wayne and added assists in the 15th and 72nd minutes. The senior provided the game-winner in the 69th minute in a 2-1 triumph over No. 10 Saint Louis.

WOMEN’S SOCCER: Chattanooga’s Smith earns TSWA Player of the Week honors
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Chattanooga’s Mackenzie Smith posted a goal with an assist in two outings to garner Tennessee Sports Writers Association Player of the Week accolades.

The Louisville, Tenn., native assisted on Kelly Tuerff’s goal in the 76th minute and found the back of the net just over a minute later against Austin Peay in a 3-0 victory. The junior posted four shots, two on goal, in a 1-1 draw versus Georgia State.

VOLLEYBALL: Carson Newman's Wheeler named TSWA Player of the Week
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Carson-Newman’s Julia Wheeler earned Tennessee Sports Writers Association Player of the Week honors, posting 69 kills and 44 digs, including double-figure kills in four straight matches to open the season for the Eagles. Wheeler is the first volleyball winner for the 2022 season.

The Murfreesboro, Tenn., native, registered 22 kills in a 3-1 win over Alabama-Huntsville, fourth-most in a single match in school history, adding 10 digs in the victory. She collected 19 kills and 18 digs against Trevecca Nazarene and added 17 and 10 kills in wins versus King University and Christian Brothers, recording eight digs in both outings.
