Chattanooga’s Phillips, Trevecca’s Sensing garner TSWA weekly accolades

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Chattanooga’s Kaili Phillips and Trevecca Nazarene’s Ashlan Sensing garnered softball Player and Pitcher of the Week accolades, respectively, by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association for their efforts in contests from April 24-30.

Phillips batted .500 (4-for-8) with two home runs, two RBIs and six walks, reaching base 12 times in a three-game series against Furman. The Harrison, Tenn., native singled, walked three times and scored twice in the series opener against the Paladins.

The junior infielder belted a solo homer to leadoff the sixth inning in the second contest, sparking a six-run inning en route to a victory. In the series finale she led off the contest with another solo shot and finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Phillips is hitting a team-best .342 with 11 doubles, nine homers, 27 RBIs and 34 runs scored in 41 games this season for UTC.

Sensing tossed her second no-hitter of the season in her only appearance of the week, missing out on a second perfect game because of an error. The sophomore righthander struck out five but committed an error in the third inning for Lake Erie’s only runner of the game. Trevecca’s weekend series at Ursuline College was rained out.

Sensing improved to 16-7 this season with a 1.28 ERA in 29 appearances (24 starts) covering 159.0 innings. She has allowed 116 hits with just 11 walks and 164 strikeouts and opponents are batting just .197.

Tennessee’s Scott, Middle Tennessee’s Sells earn TSWA weekly honors

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee’s Christian Scott and Middle Tennessee’s James Sells were named the baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association for their efforts in contests from April 24-30.

Scott batted .600 (6-for-10) with two home runs, eight runs scored and nine RBI along with five walks in four games for the Vols. The Clarksville, Tenn., native started the week with a 2-for-2 effort with three runs and four RBIs against Bellarmine, including a three-run homer and an RBI single.

The senior collected a two-run single and scored a run in the first of a three-game series against Mississippi State and posted a single, two runs scored and two walks in the second contest versus the Bulldogs. He was 2-for-3 with a three-run homer and two runs scored in the final game against MSU.

Scott is hitting .295 with four doubles, five home runs, 22 RBIs and 23 runs scored in 42 games (24 starts) this season for Tennessee.

Sells tossed six shutout innings of relief against Louisiana Tech in the series finale and worked 6.1 scoreless innings in two outings for the week, both versus the Bulldogs.

The Winchester, Tenn., native got the final out in a 12-8 Blue Raider victory in the second game of the series against Tech. The sophomore righthander then pitched scoreless frames in the series finale, allowing five hits with one walk and six strikeouts, retiring the side in order in the fifth and sixth innings.

Sells has a 2-3 mark this season in 20 appearances, all in relief, working 47.1 innings while allowing 16 walks with 36 strikeouts.

Middle Tennessee’s Boyd, Trevecca’s Keele earn TSWA weekly honors

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee’s Jeremiah Boyd and Trevecca Nazarene’s Jack Keele were named the baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association for their efforts in contests from April 17-23.

Boyd batted .312 (5-for-16) in four games with four home runs, seven RBIs and four runs scored for the Blue Raiders. The Harrisburg, N.C., native hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning in a 6-2 victory over Lipscomb in the midweek.

He helped Middle Tennessee take 2-of-3 from Rice over the weekend, including an RBI single and a solo home run in the second of three games against the Owls. In the series finale he collected a two-run homer in the first and a solo shot in the eighth in an extra-inning victory for the Blue Raiders.

Boyd is hitting .301 with three doubles, 12 home runs, 36 RBIs and 29 runs scored in 38 games this season.

Keele tossed a seven-inning, complete-game shutout, allowing just one hit with eight strikeouts against the University of Findlay. The McMinnville, Tenn., native walked two and hit two batters but retired the side in order in the second, fifth and seventh innings. He did not allow a runner past second base and Findlay’s only hit was a leadoff single in the fourth.

Keele upped his record to 5-2 with a 3.09 ERA this season in 10 appearances covering 58.1 innings, giving up 51 hits with 16 walks and 48 strikeouts. Opponents are batting just .230 against the sophomore righthander.

King’s Campbell, Walter garner TSWA weekly accolades

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – King University’s Jessica Campbell and Madison Walter garnered softball Player and Pitcher of the Week accolades, respectively, by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association for their efforts in contests from April 17-23.

Campbell batted .471 (8-for-17) with two doubles, three triples, three RBIs and nine runs scored while also drawing four walks in six games for the Tornado. The Graysville, Tenn., native posted two hits with a double, a triple and two runs scored in the first game against Lees-McRae.

She added two hits with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored in the first game versus Mount Olive and collected a single, one RBI and a run scored in the second contest against the Trojans. The junior ended the week with two hits, including a triple, and four runs scored in a doubleheader versus UNC Pembroke.

Campbell is hitting .467 with five doubles, five triples, 10 home runs, 39 RBIs and 58 runs scored in 51 games this season.

Walter posted a 3-0 mark with a 0.67 ERA in three games covering 21.0 innings for the Tornado, giving up just two runs on 12 hits with 12 strikeouts. The Lebanon, Pa., native gave up two runs on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts in a 4-2 victory against Lees-McRae.

The senior righthander tossed a three-hit shutout in a 5-0 win versus Mount Olive, walking one with no strikeouts and gave up just three hits in another shutout, this one a 1-0 victory against UNC Pembroke, with no walks and seven strikeouts.

Walter improved to 11-5 with a 1.96 ERA with 11 complete games and five shutouts in 21 appearances over 103.1 innings this season. She has allowed 102 hits with 25 walks and 71 strikeouts.
