College players of the week recognized - April 15

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Tech infielder Eddie Garza had an incredible week at the plate as he earned the Tennessee Sports Writers Association’s College Baseball Player of the Week honor on Tuesday.

Already named the Ohio Valley Conference’s Player of the Week on Monday, Garza batted .667 on the week with a .692 on-base and 1.417 slugging percentage as the Rio Grande City, Texas, native helped led the Golden Eagles to a three-game sweep over Southern Indiana this weekend in a league series.

In the series opener, Garza smashed his first round-tripper of the year with a three-run shot to left to go along with a two-run single in the fifth. Garza then hit a pair of home runs in the fifth and sixth innings on Sunday to complete the sweep and put Tech in sole possession of first place in the OVC standings.

On the bump, Austin Peay junior Lyndon Glidewell collected a no-hitter in the second game against North Alabama in an Atlantic Sun series this past weekend. Glidewell blanked the Lions as he struck out five and allowed just one baserunner with a walk in the first frame. He threw just 87 pitches in the 20-0, seven-inning contest.

Glidewell, named the National Pitcher of the Week by the College Baseball Foundation and was the Atlantic Sun’s Pitcher of the Week, threw just the sixth no-hitter in Governors’ history. It was the first one for APSU since Mike Eikenberry in 1996.

SOFTBALL: Chattanooga graduate utility Kailey Snell was named the Softball Player of the Week as she batted .500 through the three-game series at Furman, helping lead the Mocs to a three-game sweep. In all, the Shelbyville, Tenn., product had two doubles and a triple as she drove in four RBI and scored six times.

Snell drove in two and scored twice in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, then again in Sunday’s finale.

In the circle, Trevecca Nazarene hurler Ashlan Sensing was named the Pitcher of the Week. The senior from Dickson, Tenn., had a 3-0 week as she compiled a 0.74 ERA with two complete-game outings. Sensing yielded just two earned runs on seven hits as she walked one with 11 strikeouts. Opponents hit .109 against her as Sensing led Trevecca to a road sweep at Delta State.

She currently leads the Gulf South Conference in victories and complete games.

TSWA recognizes college players of the week - April 8

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Union University outfielder Carson Chavies had a huge week as the Bulldogs won their series against Alabama-Huntsville and earning this week’s Tennessee Sports Writers Association’s College Baseball Player of the Week award.

The senior from Collierville, Tenn., finished 8-for-14 on the week with three home runs and a double, while also driving in 13 runs and scoring six more times. He ended the week with a 1.849 OPS and 1.286 slugging percentage.

He went 4-for-8 during Friday’s doubleheader, hitting a home run in both games, then went 4-for-6 in the finale with a round-tripper and a double.

On the hill, Tennessee junior lefty Liam Doyle was the starting end of a combined no-hitter for the second time this season as he struck out eight and walked two over six scoreless innings with the Volunteers silencing Texas A&M 10-0 in a seven-inning run-rule decision.

The Derry, N.H., product led the Vols to their 10th no-hitter in program history and the first by a Southeastern Conference team in league play since Vanderbilt delivered a no-no to Kentucky in 2022.

SOFTBALL: Chattanooga took both awards on the softball side as graduate Kailey Snell was named the Player of the Week and junior Peja Goold was named the Pitcher of the Week.

Snell led the Mocs at the plate, hitting .571 with a double and three RBI while scoring twice. The Shelbyville, Tenn., native was 3-for-3 with two RBI on a single in the second and a double in the fifth inning against Jacksonville State. She also had a 4-for-4 day against Western Carolina with two RBI in the series opener before adding another hit and RBI in the finale Saturday.

Goold made two starts in three appearances last week, collecting 20 strikeouts with six walks to go with a 2.39 ERA. The Stockton, Calif., native earned her Southern Conference-leading 14th win and second save of the campaign. Against the Gamecocks, she entered the game with two down in the sixth, then worked through the seventh to earn her second save of the season. In the middle game against the Catamounts, she earned her 14th win of the season, then struck out 12 in the finale in her 13th complete outing this year.

College players of the week honored by TSWA - April 1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay senior outfielder Cameron Nickens had an impressive week as the Govs’ slugger collected nine RBI on the week, earning this week’s Tennessee Sports Writers Association College Baseball Player of the Week honor.

Nickens opened his week with a home run and two RBI against in-state foe Tennessee Tech, then went a combined 8-for-12 in the Atlantic Sun series against Bellarmine, including seven RBI, three runs scored, two doubles and a home run.

The Magnolia, Texas, native was named the A-Sun Player of the Week as he batted .529 over the four games with five extra-base hits. He improved to a .407 batting average on the season with 39 total RBI and 10 round-trippers.

On the bump, Carson-Newman freshman hurler Kolton Casson was named the Pitcher of the Week as he went seven innings against UVA-Wise, striking out 13 as he yielded just one run on eight hits for his fourth complete game of the season.

The Benton, Tenn., native recorded the most strikeouts by an Eagle pitcher since Dillon Cate whiffed 15 against Northwood back in 2018. He was also named the WePlayed Sports South Atlantic Conference Pitcher of the Week.

SOFTBALL: King University senior third baseman/catcher Alyssa Suits earned the Softball Player of the Week honor as she guided the Tornado to a 3-1 mark on the week, hitting .733 with 11 hits in 15 at-bats. Among those, she collected two home runs, two doubles and a triple as she drove in seven runs and came home to score seven more.

The Jonesborough, Tenn., native earned the Conference Carolinas Player of the Week honor. Among her week’s highlights included a 3-for-5 game against Emmanuel with a double and a home run with two RBI and three runs scored and a 3-for-3 game against Converse with three RBI and two runs scored, collecting a double and a triple.

In the circle, Chattanooga pitcher Taylor Long claimed the Pitcher of the Week honor as she compiled a 0.00 ERA with a 2-0 record, striking out 19 among her two complete-game shutouts.

The Calhoun, Ga., product was named the Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week. Long started the week with a 1-0 victory over Tennessee Tech, taking a no-hitter against the Golden Eagles into the fifth frame as she struck out eight. Against Mercer, Long sat down 11 more in a 6-0 victory to improve to 8-0 on the season with 94 strikeouts and a 2.52 ERA.
